Want to be a torchworker? Start here.

Borosilicate: Part A is our most in-depth beginner level class that immerses students in the art of borosilicate lampworking. Over the next four classes, you’ll learn all of the basic skills needed to begin your journey as a glass artist. Eventually you’ll gain the knowledge you need to work and create independently, be it in your own studio or here at SGS during open torch time, or torch rentals. This class is also a stepping stone to take Borosilicate: Part B, Borosilicate: Part C, and other more advanced workshops.

We will start with the basic skills such as:

  • Gathering, restricting, punty
  • Frit application
  • Solid-to-solid connections
  • Applying lines and dots of color
  • Two-handed rotation
  • Sculptural and decorative techniques

Boro Part A projects may include:

  • Basic lens pendant
  • Basic implosion marbles
  • Basic vortex marbles
  • Basic color understanding

Each class is 3 hours long and demos are kept short in order to maximize students hands on time.

Each class allows you to practice these skills in the studio and use them to create a variety of items you can take home with you each night. No experience is required to take this course.
