Borosilicate Part C: Advanced Solid Work

Borosilicate Part C is a continuation of Borosilicate Part BOver the next four classes, you’ll dive into the world of borosilicate solid work. This class is also stepping stone to other more advanced workshops.


Focus on solid borosilicate with more advanced techniques.

CLASS DATES SESSION I: 6/28, 7/5, 7/12, 7/19 

  • Session I: June 28th – July 19th/ 4 Tuesdays / Tuesday 5:30pm – 9:30pm

PREREQUISITE: Boro B or Department Head/Instructor Approval

There is a 45.00 material fee for this class. The fee is payable on the first day of class.

  • Shaping gathers
  • Welds
  • Fuming with Silver and Gold
  • Pattern techniques
  • Pinwheels
  • Spinning Tops
  • Geometric shapes
  • Honeycombs
  • Raking
  • Advanced implosions
  • Advanced sculpture
  • Dichroic use in Vortex Marbles

Each class allows you to practice these skills in the studio and use them to create a variety of items you can take home with you each night.

Other topics covered in this course: Safety (ventilation, eye ware, work station setup and ergonomics). Tools and how to use them effectively. Proper kiln usage, temperatures, and how to program a kiln for best results. Torch operations, as well as flame settings and their use. How to harness gravity and use it to your advantage. Project planning, preparation, and execution.

After your first class, you will be able to sign up for Flame-Shop-Fridays.  A great place to practice what you just learned. …  a great value at 10.00/hour. (Click here for more information about Flame-Shop-Fridays).

Additional Notes: All materials and safety equipment included with the material fee. We supply all of the glass. You don’t have to try to figure out what colors you might want to use. We have a wide spectrum available for class use. If you want to purchase some glass to use during open studio time, you will receive 10% off of you purchase during class, or during open studio. (Because we’re a non-profit, you never have to pay sales tax at SGS). When you buy glass at SGS, you save money and help support the glass arts. Thanks!
