Boro Journey with Brian Jacobson: A Progressive Series
Class 1: Beginner (October 3, 5, 10, 12)
5:30 to 9:30 PM
• Learning about different flame sizes and chemistries and what they’re used for
• How to break down tubing into manageable sections (blanks) by means of pulling points and welding up small tubing handles
• Applying pure silver with the flame by fuming onto the clear glass blanks to add color, contrast, and elegance
• Order of operations and shaping the silver fumed blanks into the classic spoon shape, i.e., learning how to make the mouthpiece, middle section, and head of the pipe; pop bowl hole, push bowl, add carburetor, and add a flat spot to make a fully functional pipe
• Adding blips/dots to the head of the pipe to create more grip and apply your own unique expression
Class Completed–Experienced flame workers may take sessions two and three.
Project materials/glass included, additional glass for color work is optional and will be available for sale.1
Class 2: Novice (November 7, 9, 14, 16)
5:30 to 9:30 PM
(Prerequisite is Class I or instructor approval; must have pictures of work and ability to explain processes, and minimum two months experience on the torch doing hollow work)
Continuation of hollow form taught in Class I:
• Applying clear over silver fume blanks to trap in the fuming by means of dots, wraps, wraps and rakes, and lines; creating even more contrast options and room for personalized creativity and unique expression
• Deeper dive into different colored rod options; brief explanation on how different colors are made, how they work, and the flames required to not bubble and work the colors correctly when applying them to blanks
• More advanced pipe shaping, going beyond the simple spoon pipe; learning about and adding marias, extending the carburetor, flattening the mouthpiece, applying bigger dots, layering of dots, horns, and different texturing techniques
• Based on pace of progression, student may learn one piece Sherlock pipe
Cost for Series of Four: $720.00
Project materials/glass included, additional glass for color work is optional and will be available for sale.
Class 3: Intermediate (December 5, 7, 12, 14)
5:30 to 9:30 PM
(Prerequisite is Class I and II or instructor approval; must have pictures of work, ability to explain processes, and minimum six months of experience on the torch doing hollow work)
• Pulling from previous knowledge of last 2 courses and applying that knowledge to make a 1 or 2 piece Sherlock style pipe, hammer pipe, and/or sidecar
• Methods for welding together 2 pieces, including bracing and bridging techniques
• Working larger diameter clear glass and breaking down into blanks
• Silver fuming the inside of larger diameter clear blanks
• Based on progression of the class: striping color to completely cover clear blank and creating a custom-colored tube; then working the tube into different pipe shapes
• Based on progression of the class, introduction to coil pots and honeycomb patterning and applying to head of the pipe
Project materials/glass included, additional glass for color work is optional and will be available for sale.
